They will help to bridge traditional craftsmanship with modern market needs, creating high-quality, authentic products. They are responsible for the entire design process, from research and conceptualization to material selection and final production, ensuring the product retains its cultural or historical essence. This role combines artistic vision with technical skill, often working with textiles, metals, or local craft techniques.
Responsibilities:
- Design & Development: Create design sketches and technical drawings for hand-made products that align with the brand’s heritage and aesthetic standards.
- Heritage Research: Research historical techniques, traditional patterns, and cultural narratives to authentic, modern interpretations.
- Material Selection: Source authentic, high-quality, and sustainable materials that reflect the heritage of the product.
- Prototyping & Sampling: Work with artisans or create prototypes personally to validate design functionality, aesthetics, and production feasibility.
- Production Oversight: Supervise the production process or parts of it to ensure the final product matches the original design, maintains high-quality standards, and honors traditional techniques.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Design Proficiency: Strong sketching skills, along with proficiency any design software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop).
- Technical Craft Knowledge: In-depth understanding of traditional production methods, textile design, or material science or ready to learn them.
- Portfolio: A comprehensive portfolio showcasing hand-made, artisan-focused, or traditional product design work.
- Attention to Detail: Meticulous eye for detail in color, texture, and form.
- Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects, meet tight deadlines, and adhere to budgets.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written skills to articulate design concepts to artisans, stakeholders, and clients.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Product Design, Textile Design, Craft Design, or a related field or practical experience with at least one or two related fields.
- Proven experience in a designer-maker role or within the artisan/heritage manufacturing sector.
